From the time we get up to the time we go to bed, we're constantly wired or surrounded by something electronical that most likely is emitting electro magnetic fields (EMFs). You'd think because it is so widely spread now that EMFs should technically be safe, but let's not kid ourselves- they aren't.
First, let's understand what EMFs are and how they can affect us.
EMFs are an area of moving electrical charges. Many things radiate EMFs, but it depends on the type of EMFs that make this a little more complicated in understanding if they're dangerous or not. There are two types: ionizing and non ionizing.
Ionizing EMFs have higher frequencies and shorter wavelengths. The energy they emit from this type of radiation can remove electrons from atoms, including those that can affect water and living tissue, such as our cells. This is dangerous for if we expose ourselves to non ionizing EMFs it can cause free radicals and subsequently create oxidative stress within us. Sources of such EMFs are things like cell phones, x-rays, blue tooth products, etc.
Non-ionizing radiation on the other hand have a longer wavelength and a lower frequency. They cannot break chemical bonds thus not as dangerous. Typically they are found through microwaves, tanning beds, and heat lamps.
So this brings us to our next question, is there a way we can mitigate the effects of EMFs and do they affect our mineral status? The answer is yes to both. EMFs affect the voltage-gated calcium channels that control how much calcium is released into our cells. Being as we are, electromagnetic beings constantly receiving and out putting energy from the earth, it seems like when these calcium channels are interrupted, they affect how our cells are capable of receiving messages, as well as how much of a message.
If you haven't read our blog on the functions of calcium, we highly recommend checking it out here. In short though, calcium regulates cell permeability, and if it is elevated, as such what EMFs do, it can hinder the absorption and influence of other minerals, enzymes, proteins, and so forth. EMFs overstimulate these calcium channels causing them to flood with calcium, resulting in poor communication, as well as injury to the calcium channels themselves. When these calcium channels are harmed, this could also affect the phospholipid barrier of our cell and leak substances in and out that could potentiate other problems.
Now you might be wondering, "Okay, cool, calcium channels super important, but I can't do anything about EMFs, what now?" Actually, you can help!
Magnesium is a natural calcium channel blocker, meaning as long as we have enough magnesium in our cells, the damage of excess calcium does not affect us. Why? Because what holds the cell membrane's integrity is magnesium itself, thus if we keep the cell strong, excess calcium won't occur.
This is when our Upgraded Magnesium comes in to save the day- and I literally mean save the day. Imagine being bombarded by EMFs everyday, but also typical stress, from work, relationships, diet, you name it. The body's first response is to upregulate magnesium usage because it is one of the most abundant minerals it needs to regulate itself in the midst of stress. This is what we would call the "magnesium burn rate". We burn it up more when stressed. Problem is that we don't just need a lot more magnesium, but readily available and absorbable magnesium. Thus, our stabilized nano mineral technology is important here. When we're stressed, our capacity to break down and absorb things also are affected, hence utilizing a magnesium that is taken into the cells by up to 99%, rather than the small percentage conventional supplements offer, we can mitigate this type of stress from occurring in the first place!
Conversely, aside from the calcium channel blocking, magnesium also helps improve redox, which essentially means it improves a type of chemical reaction that involves a transfer of electrons between two species. As mentioned before, EMFs can remove electrons from tissues. An oxidation-reduction reaction is a chemical reaction in which the oxidation number of a molecule, atom, or ion changes by gaining or losing an electron. Magnesium stabilizes this and prevents us from losing electrons.
Further more, if a cell is too stressed or is gone beyond repair, such as if the barrier is too damaged, cell apoptosis can occur. Interestingly enough, magnesium prevents that as well, so this little mineral is truly a super hero, especially with how its needed for close to 3200 functions in the body!
